Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Men's Shed is a well known umbrella title for a range of constructive craft , engineering and restorative activities that happen across the country.
In 2015 Next Steps started the first one in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire, at our resource centre in Norton, Malton.
Since then we have spread out to use 2 more local venues in market towns across Ryedale - Pickering and Kirkbymoorside. The interest and numbers attending has taken us by surprise and we have grown on a very 'ad-hoc' basis. What we would like to do,moving forward is to consolidate what has happened to date, plan a more structured approach, be able to fully support the volunteers that we have gained, as well as attracting more, and to deliver the best service we can for our beneficiaries.
What we have found out over the last 3 year's is that there is a real need for the Men's Shed Groups. Our first group in Norton,Malton, started with 6 beneficiaries and 1 volunteer. We now run the group in 3 market town locations in Ryedale - Pickering , Kirkbymoorside and the original in Norton. The numbers of beneficiaries that we get are somewhat dependant on the space at each location, but we regularly get the following numbers - Pickering 60, Kirkbymoorside 32, Norton 12.
We started to offer the sessions to men that came to our Mental Health Resource Centre, but as popularity increased, some of our partner organsations would refer to us, i.e. Norton Community Library, Ryedale Special Families, MIND, Ryedale Carer's Resource. We do get some men attending who need additional support to attend, because of physical disability or dementia. We also found that many older men attend to combat loneliness.
The groups have, to date, been run by volunteers, and this has worked well most of the time, but what we really need now is a paid, qualified member of staff to co-ordinate all of this activity, and this is the objective of this application.

Sessions will still be well supported by volunteers, but we need some co-ordination to move this activity to the next level. And we feel we need a person with a background in mental health support and community development provision.
We would like to employ an Activities Co-ordinator for 16 hours per week , for one year from January 2019 to December 2019.

What difference will a Project Co-ordinator make to Ryedale Mobile Men's Shed :
* we will be able to consolidate success so far
* we will be able to support the volunteers that we have gained to date
* we will be able to evaluate the outcomes of the work to date, and use it to establish this provision long term
* we can support a wider range of beneficiary including some with dementia
* we can plan sessions to get the most out of the location and time available
* we will be able to signpost beneficiaries, where appropriate, into other support services.
* we can continue to support improved mental health for Men

Moment of Pride

This project, builds on 3 years of experience in growing an activity from a few attendees and one volunteer to something that has exceeded the need that we anticipated. We took the Men's Shed theory and have put it into practice. This year we have won the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
