Skills for life

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Established in 1992, FLEX FM has become one of the most influential broadcasting radio stations of its generation. With 26 years broadcast experience, FLEX FM has grown into a multi-media broadcasting and production organisation to serve the community of London and beyond. We are a radio station that prides itself on the greatest electronic dance music, whether it’s homegrown genre’s such as UK Garage, Dubstep, Grime, Drum & Bass as well as being at the very forefront in other various types of electronic music as well as embracing all types of creative arts in modern times.

On 11th May 2017, FLEX FM was awarded a community FM licence to broadcast as a legal radio station in London after cementing its place in the history books as one of the UK’s greatest pirate radio stations of all time. We are the 3rd station in history to make this transition to a legal station with Kiss FM (1990) and Rinse FM (2010).

FLEX FM has become one of the main central hub’s for creative arts in London and beyond and we have supported and helped nurture many homegrown artists over the years. This has resulted in many major organisations working in conjunction with FLEX FM such as Nescot College, Epsom, South Thames College, Wandsworth, Ark Putney Academy and Ibiza White 103.7 FM, Ibiza. Our main objective is to create creative opportunities within our organisation in broadcasting & production, enabling the community to get involved in many of our exciting projects which will include providing NCFE & ASDAN training and qualifications in DJing, music production and radio broadcasting. We also have students working on filming and editing projects that we have been involved in.

Our responsibility is to inspire and influence our community in the best way possible with our services within our organisation.

We will actively encourage direct participation by volunteers in all aspects of the station activity and we see clear benefits here for both Flex FM and for those who contribute.

• We will continue to proactively engage with local community groups to form media partnerships allowing the station to add value to their work. These will be mutual agreements working together for the benefit of the people of the boroughs we serve. There will be no barriers to anyone with an interest or aptitude from becoming involved.

• By partnering with local schools and colleges, training opportunities will be offered to help develop the confidence levels, skills and talents of volunteers.

We already provide opportunities for disadvantaged local people in the form of training courses and ‘hands on’ voluntary involvement with the radio station. Flex FM offers a unique learning environment characterized by an open-door policy, informal atmosphere, participatory ethos and a commitment to equal opportunities. It allows for a practical and flexible teaching method, giving options for those who may have found a more formal approach to learning unsuccessful.

Flex FM is an NCFE & ASDAN approved training centre, providing a selection of courses. All training will take place at our premises in the same site as the radio studio and recording studio we work closely with.
The funding that we are applying for is for an educational training room and facilities to provide the courses and educational training for local people with additional needs or who are susceptible to social inclusion.

We want to extend this training programme to the five boroughs that we are associated with, Wandsworth, Merton, Kingston, Sutton and Croydon.

The video that we have uploaded is a festival project that was completed as a representation of what we can achieve working with the local community. The festival was a local festival in our borough and all of the filming, presenting, design, editing, sound, graphics and visuals were done by underprivileged young people of our local community and students from a local college.
