Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

Formed by the merger of two of the oldest hockey clubs in London, each weekend Bromley and Beckenham Hockey Club field 9 Men’s teams and 5 Ladies teams, playing as high as the South & East Premier Hockey Leagues right down to the local Kent Leagues.

Junior development is viewed as critical for future success of the Club; we have a thriving section with around 300 youngsters aged 8 to 18 participating each weekend. We’re a hard working club that supports youth development in the community and have a number of ties to local schools; with this in mind, with the Aviva Community Fund grant we plan on going into more primary schools, especially those with a high ethnic diversity and in low income areas to get kids playing the sport and then supporting them to transition into a club locally to them.

A grant of £25k would:-
• Enable us to hire 2 part-time coaches in year 1. They would deliver free hockey sessions at primary schools across South East London, as well as attending after school clubs and other community groups such as Beavers and Guides.
• Buy equipment to take into the schools to run the training sessions.
• Allow us to offer children the chance to purchase subsidised equipment if they enjoyed the sport and wanted to take it up at a club level.
• Allow us the time to make the project sustainable beyond year 1 by recruiting newly qualified teachers, graduates thinking of teaching or coaching and other volunteers, giving them practical CV building work experience opportunities and coaching qualifications so they can continue to help support the free coaching within schools and community groups

This would project would be led by our current Performance and Development Coach, with support from a number of volunteers already in place at the club. We have already begun work on this project; with 1 coach we have managed to introduce and coach 100 kids into hockey in 4 schools. We have already established there is much more demand, that we currently can’t meet with limited resource.

Currently most activity is at afterschool clubs, however there is demand for early morning clubs which with extra coaches we can provide.

We envisage targeting non-traditional hockey schools through enrichment programs to encourage kids from all demographics to take part in the sport and to support and facilitate those that want to go further in the sport.

Being active is so important to encourage, nurture and develop in young minds and bodies; encouraging them to get active and think about the possibility of a team sport such as hockey is vital. Our aim is to introduce the idea of wellbeing through sport and being active along with the comradery and fun of a team sport and the positive mental and emotional health this encourages.

We want to encourage kids to take up hockey on a longer-term basis and would offer free membership to those that joined Bromley and Beckenham HC, however our main goal is to encourage children to get active so if they choose a different sport or want to join a different hockey club which is local to them we will support them in this.

Bromley and Beckenham Hockey Club

Moment of Pride

Bromley and Beckenham have a team of amazing volunteer coaches that have the passion and drive to introduce hockey and an active lifestyle to over 300 kids each week come rain or sunshine; they and our club would relish the opportunity to help hundreds, hopefully thousands of children become active.
