Description

Our village in Stirlingshire skirts the edge of a historic and beautiful woodland. It has everything we could wish for: a ruined castle and grounds, wildlife (red squirrels, roe deer), peaceful walks, fascinating mature trees, mountain biking and what's more, it played an important role in history, being a hideout at the time of the famous Battle of Bannockburn. Our community, young and old, use it constantly, for recreation, education, exercise, bird-watching - and others come from all over the county for walks and cycling too. The local primary school sits on the border of the woodland; it can be seen for miles around, and from most houses in the village. Unfortunately, it's kept unkempt and ignored by its current owner, with an attempted foresting project now disregarded and over-mature, and one side threatened by renewed aggressive quarrying - all of these things are gradually degrading the woodland areas. Our community is desperately trying to club together to buy this lovely land and protect it for respectful use by all. We've been in long negotiations, and so far raised almost the full amount the landowner would like, so that we can purchase and improve the woodland, clearing old and dangerous trees, improving access, establishing more wildlife monitoring stations, and allowing the children of the village safe adventures as their grandparents had! We have had a small taste of what we could achieve when we were allowed to lease a part of the woodland for 2 years, and we worked hard to open it up and proudly create a Community Woodland area, still maintained and appreciated. The Development Trust already has groups working on the main part of the woods, doing as much conservation and repair as we're allowed on what is still private land, but if we can just raise this last amount, we can secure the woods permanently into the community Trust and care, for everyone, for ever, to enjoy and band together to nurture and develop, rather than rot or be built upon. We love our Gillies Hill woods and we're desperate to look after it properly!

Cambusbarron Community Development Trust

Our Development Trust is a group of volunteers of all ages - all of whom have many other commitments, and are from all walks of life, but who are all bound together by the shared community vision and love of our precious woodland. We all do our bit to raise funds and awareness, whatever way we can.
