To provide this amazing school with some much needed playground equipment to transform their existing outdoor play area into an activity area all pupils can enjoy. Ysgol Ty Coch would like to install a wheelchair accessible swing, Inclusive wheelchair friendly roundabout with scooter and seat, safety flooring, an adjustable water table and an InGround Trampoline.

YTC caters for approx. 155 children (aged 3 – 19) nearly all of whom have statements of special educational needs. These needs include, severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), hearing impairment (HI), Visual Impairment (VI) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Many pupils also experience complex health related conditions which occasionally can be life limiting.

Playing on a swing, jumping on a trampoline or simply having fun on different pieces of playground equipment are simple, precious and valuable pastimes. These experiences are so important and special yet not all children are able to easily have this opportunity. Play is a crucial component in a child’s physical and emotional development. High quality play is an important precursor to children growing into healthy, happy members of society. Children with complex physical and health conditions often find significant barriers to their play. A new playground could have long lasting, life changing positive effects on hundreds of children both now and in the future. It would allow all pupils to easily access high quality play together.

At YTC, these precious moments should be shared by all but the right playground equipment is needed for this. The school wants all of the children to play and have fun together without facing any barriers. However, specialist and adapted playground equipment is up to 10 times the cost of mainstream equipment. A swing for example could cost approx £4000. YTC celebrates diversity and every achievement is valued and appreciated. They believe in inclusion for all and working together to ensure accessibility and engagement is achievable for all pupils.

The benefits of the children having access to this equipment are endless and include wellbeing, social skills, health, creativity, learning, explore and independence. It will facilitate the children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. The lifespan of the playground equipment is over 20 years and could potentially be used by thousands of children over this time.

Children of all needs and physical abilities will have the benefits of this equipment. In addition, through the school intending to adopt an ‘open playground’ policy, it will seek to allow members of the local community (who have a disability) to access high quality play equipment as the project would create one of the only fully accessible play facilities in the area. This will bring the school and the community closer together which will raise the profile of the school even further within the area.

YTC are celebrating their 40th birthday in 2019, this project could mark this important milestone with such an amazing gift to the charity. The dream of a new play/activity area for everyone to enjoy has the chance of becoming a reality with the support of The Aviva Community Fund.

YTC are proactive in their approach to fundraising and donations are used to provide essential services, equipment and facilities for the children year on year in order for them to develop their skills to their full potential. Skills that we take for granted daily such as, communication, social interaction, gross/fine motor and creative skills. These skills are so vital for children to be able to learn and understand. We have formed a close bond and friendship with the school and the teachers within it and have pledged to continue to support them through our Corporate and Social Responsibility volunteering hours to help further improve the school.

Moment of Pride

We have worked closely with the school and having visited the school on many occasions, it is clear how important things are that we take for granted, such as playing in a playground. It is vitally needed in order to assist the children’s development. YTC is a truly amazing, forward thinking school.
