Description

Asperger’s Children and Carers Together (ACCT) is a support group for children and families affected by Asperger’s syndrome and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Sheffield. We run weekly activity groups for children and teenagers with Asperger’s and ASD, swimming and football sessions, support meetings for parents and carers, family days out and other trips.

“…ACCT has been our lifeline in the past year…”

We provide weekly sessions for our younger age group 3-12 years in our Acctivate club for 40 children and a weekly youth club for 30 teenagers. The children and young people participate in a range of activities - Arts and Crafts, Storytelling, Basketball, Football, Table Tennis, as well as supervised use of computer games and learning programmes. We provide a space where young people are able to be themselves in a safe environment where they are accepted and do not feel under pressure, meet new friends and receive support from staff and volunteers.

“…coming to ACCT has improved my son’s attention span as well as his communication and social skills… ”

We also run a monthly swimming session when the pool is hired for the exclusive use of our families to allow conditions to be created, lower lighting/ quieter music, to allow everyone to enjoy themselves. We deliver weekly football sessions, coached by Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme. And, during the summer holidays we also run a programme of day trips for the whole family to the seaside and local attractions.

In addition, we offer support to parents and carers through regular parents meetings, drop-ins, training courses and a private Facebook group.

“… I get a few precious hours to myself knowing my son is safe and happy in a sensitive and understanding environment…”

ACCT activities take place for 50 weeks of the year, and benefit over 500 families per year.

Voting for ACCT could provide £1,000 that would pay for new music and sports equipment for activities in our clubs as well as arts materials and the costs of delivering any other ideas that our children and young people come up with!
