Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

When Knights was established in 2009, basketball was a little-played sport in the borough of Richmond. 9 years on, and over 1000 children participate in basketball sessions every week. Knights Basketball Academy CIC is a not-for-profit sports club that operates 23 teams from under-9 to Seniors for over 250 male and female players, as well as a junior wheelchair basketball team. These players have to travel across Surrey, London and the South-East of England to find competitive opportunities that help them develop their skills. League fixtures are included within the club membership fees yet some teams will only get to play 10-12 fixtures in an entire season. To provide further game experiences, coaches take teams to extra friendly tournaments that require additional entrance fees as well as considerable travel for players and their families.

The Knights Community Basketball League would aim to reduce the barriers to participation by organising free, competitive games that are easy to access for young people within our club. We will also enrol participants into leadership & officiating training to operate within the league. These volunteers will be available for further leagues and events and therefore make the league sustainable for future seasons.

The Knights Community Basketball League will be divided into four age groups - under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16. Age groups will compete in different game formats to aid their skill development, these will include 3v3 half-court, 4v4 Cross court and/or 5v5 full-court games. Each age group will receive 3 rounds of league fixtures across the year, with teams of 5-8 players competing in 3-6 games in every round. We aim for 200 children to participate in the league that would run on weekend afternoons from February to December 2019. Furthermore, each team will play one fixture of wheelchair basketball with members of our junior wheelchair basketball team to aid inclusion and integration across our club. Teams will be organised from across different areas and schools within the borough to encourage players to develop new friendships. The community spirit within our club is already very strong, but only a select number of teams play in leagues where their fixtures are within the borough. This league will make it easier for friends and families to watch the participants in action, and in doing so will make our home venue a hub for our members and the wider community.

The money will be spent on:
Sports Hall/Basketball Court hire
Coaches and officials to deliver fixtures
Officiating courses for participants
Equipment (scoreboards, prizes, etc.)
Administration - a league coordinator to organise & communicate the fixture schedule

The league will provide young people in our community with a safe and positive environment that is close to their homes. The funding will make a difference to these 200+ players who deserve to have more opportunities to play the sport they love.
