Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

WHO CARES FOR YOU? – A project to research the needs of, and deliver a programme of support, for those who devote their time to caring for others.

Of Boltons’ 50+ population of approximately 100,000 over 30,600 carers over 80% are aged 65+

With this project we will find those in need and enhance their ability to continue to care with a strong emphasis on their own health and wellbeing needs. Offering a range of interventions and activities to support them to remain as mentally, physically and socially, active as possible.

A feeling of belonging, being cared for and having something fulfilling to do with others is vitally important despite the limitations of age, caring responsibilities and the carers own health conditions.

With our experience of working with 5,000 + older people each year we understand carer needs and have access to the offer of regular assistance and support to enable them to focus on their own health and wellbeing.

Social isolation, loneliness and carer self-neglect are huge concerns and we will increase opportunities for carers to re-engage with family, friends and the wider community and to be able to reduce the impact of caring on their own wellbeing.

Tailor made provision of unique & diverse ranges of information & support for carers

What we will do:-

• Find those carers in need, especially hidden carers with inadequate or no support in place - support 100 carers to take part in this pilot
• Engage with GP surgeries - social prescribing signposting people to preventative interventions
• Establish carers needs and wants – from focus groups, insight and engagement
• Establish the key concerns - create carer centred responses to address specified issues.
• Spread the word - communicate the programme, timetable & delivery procedures
• Provide surgeries - specialist advice in mental health, e.g. develop coping strategies
• Provide classes – focusing on strength & balance, stress relief, back protection.
• Create wellbeing – social events, establish new friendships/renew past ones, reduce social isolation, holistic therapies, mindfulness, reflexology and aromatherapy.

Working with and for 50 + Boltonians for over 70 years, with the support of over 360 volunteers, we have vast experience of: increasing levels of healthy ageing by keeping active; support for people with high level complex needs; positive impacts on health, wellbeing and community connectivity; enabling people to make well-informed decisions.

We believe people should vote for this project because it represents our response to evidence gathered through experience and is driven by a recognition of local community need for extended carer centred support.

The project will be delivered over a 12 month period overseen by our Enhanced Day Care Steering Group comprised of Age UK Bolton, Bolton Cares, Bolton Carers and Dementia Support Groups, the service will draw on the extensive expertise and relevant specialisms of all partners.
